The theme for this year's BITF, Your Ultimate Destination for Business, Culture and Nature is indeed appropriate. The convergence of business interest, cultural diversity and natural attractions in Sabah offer new, unique and high value trading and business opportunities, which we hope delegates will explore. The theme is also in line with the emphasis placed on sustainable development, as outlined in the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) blueprint. It is clearly stated in the SDC that we will not sacrifice our natural resources for the sake of growth, and armed with lessons of the past, we are taking steps to sustain ably use our resources as we move forward in developing Sabah.
The present economic conditions has seen major global financial institutions and industry players crumbling and Malaysia cannot help but be wary of its effect on our economy. Pre-emptive measures, such as the RM60 billion stimulus package announced by the Malaysian Government, had to be taken to soften the inevitable impact of the drastic global economic downturn. The move shows that the Malaysian Government is indeed very concerned about the welfare of its people, and is doing what it can to ease burden of its citizens. The stimulus package, and other project that have been planned over the years, will also help open new trade and business opportunities that ultimately help Sabah and Malaysia prosper.
The commitment shown by the organizers of BITF has opened up a platform for international trade opportunities. I am confident that this year's event will once again succeed in hosting the largest and most comprehensive display of products and services in the region. Congratulations to all who have worked hard to make this event a reality and to delegates, I wish you a fruitful time in Sabah.
